Recent Work

I have been concentrating mainly on patient care and establishing my practice for the last 10 years. During that time I have published features in the allergy press, worked with freelancers most often anonymously for many national newspaper and magazine features, written an 18 month long column for the local daily newspaper, a 3 year monthly feature article for Saddleworth Monthly, the local county magazine, a monthly e-News for 800+ patients and was Editor of Our Voice a monthly magazine for the now defunct Nutritional Cancer Therapy Trust.

“Micki – there just cannot be enough thank-yous. I really am so very grateful. May you go from success to success.” Heather.

The newsletter is FAB! Thanks.” JW

Thank you for all the help you have given me over the last year – you’ve changed my life!” HK

Personal, Writing & Career History

Split up from my siblings, I was brought up in care after my alcoholic mother committed suicide when I was 10 and my ‘father’ abandoned us. (He has recently denied he is my father – apparently I may be the product of an Italian fishmonger who delivered fish to the Army barracks, but who knows?) I was determined not to become the drop-out that everyone expected given my background. I have worked hard to build a successful career and happy personal life. I am now close to my sisters and we have recently found our long-lost brother after 40 years! I live with my hypnotherapist partner and cat, believe life is for living and simply love what I do.

With a really rubbish start in life (2 months premature, 4th child of a very young alcoholic chain-smoking mother and mal-nourished before being taken into care), my own health has suffered. It is a constant struggle to deal with a poor immune system, polycystic ovary syndrome and multiple allergies. As a result, I can understand and empathise greatly with those in poor health, but can also put myself up as someone who can beat the odds and come out smiling!

I began writing at school, winning an English Prize for Literature at A level. The County rules were changed to allow funding for me to attend University where I gained a 2i in English, American and African Literature. Following that, I knew I wanted to work in natural medicine and immediately went to work for Holland & Barrett. Starting with running a local shop (which I took from the worst to best performing), I progressed within 2 years to Customer Services Manager, PR and general troubleshooter for the group of stores. This gave me huge experience in answering both common and more unusual health questions as well as insight into the health needs of the general population.

Whilst at Holland & Barrett, I launched 3 natural health magazines, one of which has evolved into Healthy the top-selling natural health magazine in the UK. I regularly ghosted features and fillers for national magazines and newspapers to launch products and get natural health messages out to the wider public. I also started an internal newsletter for stores full of common Q&A, training tips, store management and product info.

I left H&B as it was taken over by Lloyds Chemists (not my bag at all!) To prove to myself I could do this PR thing, I took a job at British Gas as a press officer and ended up the senior PR manager for Midlands and East Anglia for 2 years. I enjoyed it – and welcomed the industry experience - but missed natural health so returned to it, training in massage and manipulative techniques and as a nutritional therapist with the renowned biochemist Prof. Lawrence Plaskett. Since then, I have concentrated on building my practice and launching Purehealth Clinic with Philip, my hypnotherapist partner. We are known as the Gillian McKeith and Paul McKenna of the North by our patients! Although I am a lot kinder than Gillian, of course…The clinic was turning over in excess of £100,000 a year for a 4 day week. We have recently closed it so I can work from home and concentrate more on writing, speaking and patient care.

“Apologies for my enthusiasm but I think you should be cloned and made available on the NHS. Your empathy and warmth shone through the phone. I bet you help patients just by chatting.” Ellen M. Goudsmit PhD CPsychol CSci AFBPsS ( ME specialist) Feb 08

“I came to see you some time ago about how my diet affects me, you helped me enormously. I do wish you all the best for the future, as I believe after all the people I spoke to (including the hospitals) with regards to allergies/dietary requirements I suffer, none were as knowledgeable or as sympathetic as you.”. LW Feb 08

“That is FAB – I’m sticking it on my fridge!!” Christine (a factsheet of low GL foods for special dieters)

Books

I have completed my first book called Help I’ve Got…PCOS (How to Beat Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), which I hope will be the first in a series of new-style natural health self-help books. I am already working on the next couple: Help I’ve Got…No Get Up & Go based on the Sparkle Wellbeing programme I have been using for patients and teaching for years, and Help I’ve Got… Allergies. I have also completed The Low GL Allergy Diet which is unique and based on the diets I have provided for patients who are pre-diabetic, have belly fat to lose and who are intolerant to wheat and dairy – thousands of them! These are available as ebooks currently but I plan to hawk them around publishers if I ever get the chance.

Speaking

I love talking about my favourite subject. I have an informal, motivational tone and have taught for NHS health programmes, local colleges and various charities and organisations. Stick me in front of 2 or 200 people and I’m away!

“The teacher, Michaela Rose, with her enthusiasm and wealth of knowledge has been an inspiration to us all. Her patience knows no bounds and her quick sense of humour has been a tonic in itself.” Pam Coombes

“You will know from the attendees themselves that they all enjoyed your course very much. Attendances remained high, indeed the best we have enjoyed out of all 12 programmes we have organised so far. Thank you.” NHS Trust

“Trainer’s delivery scored 96% excellent.” Princess Carers Trust
