What is it?
We all live in a kind of ‘toxic soup’ and environmental medicine is all about identifying the source of toxins in your life and environment, how they may be contributing to poor health, eliminating them from the body and reducing your daily intake of them.
Why is this important?
It is a well known fact that toxins have a major effect on our bodies at a cellular level. We cannot expect to feel well and energised in life if we are carrying around a ‘toxic load.’ More importantly, various toxins are thought to be important factors in why we develop major illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.
What kind of toxins are we talking about?
Unfortunately we are surrounded by them in today’s lifestyle. On their own, they may be in minor quantities, but if you add up how many we ingest daily, it becomes a significant amount. Everyone knows about pesticides in food and chlorine in water etc, but you would be surprised what is in your daily skincare items, air fresheners, cleaning fluids, bath foams and so on! Many companies suggest their products are pure, but in reality, non-toxic products are very hard to find. Just because the bottle has a picture of a plant and says it is natural or contains organic material, does NOT make it non-toxic – they still invariably contain a load of nasties. Just as importantly, we make toxins in our own bodies and our digestive system, liver and kidneys need to be working effectively to deal with them.
How can you help?
All of our patients are encouraged to lower their toxic load and to detox those they carry already. We cannot heal someone without ensuring their digestive system and liver are working at optimum level. We can educate you how to reduce your ‘toxic load’ in day-to-day life.
What should I do now?
Please feel free to talk to us for ideas. In the meantime, swap some of your everyday items such as moisturiser, toothpaste etc to organic, non-toxic versions, filter your water and buy organic food. We recommend everyone does a professional detox at least once a year.
